Solutions for data storage, computing and rugged displays to be featured at Norway gathering March 25-27
Spectra Aerospace & Defense will have a strong presence at this year’s Undersea Defence Technology (UDT) exhibition, set for March 25-27 in Lillestrøm, Norway. Representatives from the company’s Galleon Embedded Computing division, based in Oslo, will be on hand.
Now in its 36th edition, UDT showcases the latest in undersea defence technology and provides opportunities for agencies to meet with companies at the leading edge. Galleon has a growing presence in underwater data storage and computing solutions, with products for traditional submarine applications as well as the expanding UUV/USV market segment.
“Galleon’s expertise in packaging and electronics design allows us to create data storage products able to record vast amounts of data in a very small size enclosure,” said Hugh Tarver, Business Director at Galleon. “That’s important in larger vehicles but even more so in UUVs where space is at a premium.”
Galleon solutions enhance operational efficiency, safety and mission success in complex submarine, frigate and unmanned surface environments.
“Our focus is on developing cutting-edge technologies for highly secure, reliable products that address the evolving challenges faced by naval forces today,” Tarver said.
That includes commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) solutions as well as custom-made products developed in partnerships with customers.
“We believe in the power of collaboration,” he said. “Our approach focuses on working closely with naval organizations to integrate our systems seamlessly with existing platforms, ensuring that our technologies provide maximum value and support mission objectives.”
In addition to storage solutions, Galleon also provides onboard computing capabilities, now being augmented with Artificial Intelligence, Tarver said.
“The ability to have powerful computing solutions in very small form factors is a game changer for many of these vehicles,” he said. “AI has the potential to make them much more useful and efficient.”
With the defence budgets of many European countries expanding in light of present threats, Tarver noted that a well-established company like Galleon is ideally positioned to deliver on future needs.
“We’re a well-known supplier in this market with facilities in Oslo, Munich and London in addition to three in the U.S.,” he said. “We’ll be on hand at UDT with some of our hardware, which allows people to see how we’ve engineered so much power and storage into such a small enclosure. We look forward to walking people through how it works, and the types of applications Galleon products can support.”
ArgonFDS
As a maker of rugged displays and peripherals, ArgonFDS maintains a significant presence in many manned underwater vehicles. Visitors to the Spectra booth can learn more about those solutions as well.
ArgonFDS Product Manager Jason Shoaf said the company’s focus on reduced Size, Weight and Power (SWaP) improves the ability to tailor products to meet exact customer requirements.
“We are an established company of 35 years with installs on multiple defense platforms,” Shoaf said. “We combine deep technical expertise with proven design capabilities to meet all requirements, development timelines, and qualification testing standards.”
He added that AI is also a factor in some of the company’s products. The ArgonFDS ACB300 rugged mission computer, for example, can be optioned with an AI-enabled GPU card.
